Respiratory diseases: symptoms and warning signs

COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)

What it is

A chronic respiratory disease characterized by a persistent limitation of airflow in the lungs, generally progressive.

Common symptoms:

  • Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity (such as walking or climbing stairs)
  • Persistent cough, present for a long time
  • Frequent mucus production
  • Fatigue and reduced ability to carry out daily activities

Bronchiectasis

What it is

A chronic respiratory disease characterized by permanent and irreversible dilation of the bronchi, associated with mucus retention and recurrent respiratory infections.

Common symptoms:

  • Daily cough with abundant sputum
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)
  • Sensation of chest heaviness or tightness

Identifying the condition may help prevent complications and improve symptom management.

Asthma (severe or uncontrolled forms)

What it is

A chronic inflammatory disease of the airways with variable airflow obstruction, which may become per- sistent in uncontrolled forms.

Common symptoms:

  • Wheezing (whistling sound during breathing)
  • Breathing difficulty
  • Chest tightness
  • Cough, often at night or early in the morning

Uncontrolled asthma can significantly worsen quality of life.

Interstitial Lung Diseases (ILD), including Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF)

What it is

A group of diseases affecting the deep lung tissue, leading to breathing difficulties and reduced oxygenation of the blood.

Common symptoms:

  • Progressive shortness of breath, mainly during physical activity
  • Persistent dry cough
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced ability to perform daily activities

Early recognition may help manage the disease and slow its progression.

Warning signs that deserve attention

  • Shortness of breath that worsens over time
  • Cough lasting for several weeks
  • Chronic sputum production and/or recurrent respiratory infections
  • Daily activities becoming increasingly difficult

When to consult a doctor

If you recognize one or more of these signs, or if symptoms worsen suddenly, it is important to speak with your doctor. In case of acute breathing difficulties, follow the instructions of emergency services.
